Our Vision

Our vision is to have the researchers that we have supported go on to secure larger grants for further studies based on the early-stage projects which we have helped to fund.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to invest in research into brain diseases, which will ultimately help patients who have injured, or developed diseases of their brain and nervous system.

Our Charity

The Neurosciences Foundation is a registered charity founded in 1978. Since then The Foundation has granted over £1.5 million to early career doctors, researchers, and scientists. This funding has gone into research projects to explore new techniques and diagnostic treatments into neurological conditions.

These conditions typically include

  • brain tumours
  • stroke
  • motor neurone disease (MND)
  • epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • head injury
  • schizophrenia
  • multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • dementia

All of the research funded by The Neurosciences Foundation has to be conducted in Scotland. Trustees, members of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and external expert advisors all give their time freely to the charity.

  • Dr Sarah Deans (Chair of the Board of Trustees)
  • Dr Kristin Flegal
  • Mrs Amanda Garden
  • Mr Henry Gildie
  • Mr James Byam Shaw
  • Dr Andrew Crawford
  • Professor Dave Wyper

The MAC is the Trust’s internal review committee. It conducts a rigorous peer review of the applications for funding.

The MAC is made up of independent experts who, after assessing applications, make recommendations for funding to the Board of Trustees. This is done before the Board of Trustees can decide which of the projects should receive funding.
